It transitioned from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake in 2022 (The Merge), significantly reducing its energy consumption. Ethereum is also the anchor for a growing family of Layer 2 networks — including Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base — that extend its capacity for scalable, low-cost applications.
